As part of the NIHR infrastructure, DEC Oxford were invited to host a stand at the BRC's public open day, held at the John Radcliffe Hospital on Thursday 21st April.

DEC Oxford
Playing 'DECisions' at the BRC Open Day

The public open day was a great opportunity to explain exactly what the DEC does; and what better way to do that than by playing a board game!

'DECisions' was designed to help illustrate the evidence gathering and regulatory pathway that a new diagnostic test would have to follow in order for the device to be implemented in clinical practice.

Starting with target discovery in the laboratory (i.e. identifying the substance that the test must be able to detect), players encounter many pitfalls along the way from failure of the test under lab conditions to not enough evidence that the device will benefit patients. By the end of the game, players have an understanding of the complexities of the adoption process and some idea of how long it takes to implement.

If you would like to play the game, click to download the board and instructions. You will need a dice and a counter for each player.

Please do let us know what you think of the game! You can email feedback to dec@phc.ox.ac.uk
